Tinubu Orders Five-Year Security Threat Assessment, Defence Plan

President Bola Tinubu has directed the preparation of a comprehensive five-year security threat assessment and defence plan for Nigeria.

The directive is aimed at developing a coordinated strategy for addressing the country’s evolving security challenges and strengthening its national defence capabilities.

Tinubu ordered the preparation of the plan during a meeting focused on Nigeria’s security situation and the need to improve coordination among relevant agencies.

The President’s Special Adviser on Homeland Security, Adeyinka Famadewa, is expected to coordinate the process and provide secretariat support for the 11-member committee responsible for developing the assessment and plan.

The committee is expected to examine Nigeria’s current security environment, identify emerging threats and develop strategies for addressing both immediate and long-term security concerns.

The exercise will also assess the country’s defence requirements and determine the resources and capabilities needed to respond effectively to emerging threats.

The administration is seeking a more structured approach to national security planning, with emphasis on anticipating threats rather than responding only after incidents occur.

The five-year plan is expected to provide a strategic framework that will guide security and defence priorities over the coming years.

It will also help strengthen cooperation among the various security agencies and improve coordination in responding to threats across the country.

The initiative comes amid continuing security challenges in different parts of Nigeria, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.

The government has repeatedly emphasised the need for stronger intelligence gathering, better coordination and improved operational capacity among security agencies.

The proposed assessment and defence plan is therefore expected to provide a clearer understanding of the country’s security vulnerabilities and outline practical measures for protecting national interests.

The committee will work towards producing a comprehensive document that can guide government decisions on security, defence planning, resource allocation and national preparedness over the next five years.
