FEC Approves Amendment to Decriminalise Attempted Suicide

The Federal Executive Council has approved an amendment to the National Mental Health Act aimed at removing criminal penalties for individuals who attempt suicide.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the council as part of efforts to strengthen mental health policies and align the country’s legal framework with modern approaches to mental health care.

Officials said the amendment seeks to treat attempted suicide as a public health issue rather than a criminal offence, encouraging affected individuals to seek professional help without fear of prosecution.

The proposed change is expected to improve access to mental health support and reduce the stigma often associated with mental health challenges.

According to government officials, criminalising attempted suicide can discourage people from seeking assistance and may worsen the difficulties faced by those experiencing emotional or psychological distress.

The amendment is also intended to promote a more compassionate and supportive response to individuals dealing with mental health conditions.

Stakeholders in the health sector have long advocated for reforms that focus on treatment, rehabilitation and counselling rather than punishment for people who attempt to take their own lives.

The government noted that the reform aligns with international best practices that recognise mental health crises as medical and social issues requiring professional intervention.

The amended legislation is expected to strengthen the protection of the rights and dignity of individuals living with mental health conditions while improving access to appropriate care and support services.

Officials further stated that the move forms part of broader efforts to improve mental health awareness, expand mental health services and create a more inclusive healthcare system.

The Federal Government expressed optimism that the reform would encourage greater public understanding of mental health issues and contribute to better outcomes for vulnerable individuals across the country.
