NBC Warns Broadcasters, Online Publishers Against Election Disinformation

The National Broadcasting Commission has cautioned broadcasters, online publishers and other media practitioners against the dissemination of false, misleading or unverified information as political campaigns intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The commission stressed the importance of accuracy, fairness and professionalism in election coverage, warning that the spread of disinformation could threaten public peace and undermine confidence in the democratic process.

According to the NBC, media organisations have a responsibility to ensure that information released to the public is properly verified and presented in a manner that promotes national stability.

The commission expressed concern over the increasing circulation of misleading political content across traditional and digital media platforms, particularly during election periods.

It urged broadcasters and online publishers to adhere strictly to professional and ethical standards while reporting political events, campaign activities and election-related developments.

The NBC also warned media operators against providing platforms for hate speech, incitement, unsubstantiated allegations and other forms of content capable of creating tension or disorder.

The commission noted that presenters, anchors and programme hosts must remain impartial and avoid presenting personal opinions as facts during political discussions and election-related programmes.

It further reminded media organisations that they would be held accountable for content transmitted through their platforms, regardless of whether such content originated from guests or contributors.

The regulator said it would closely monitor election coverage and enforce existing regulations against any organisation found to have violated the provisions of the broadcasting code.

The NBC called on journalists, broadcasters, online publishers and other stakeholders in the media industry to contribute positively to the electoral process by promoting factual reporting and responsible communication.

It maintained that credible and balanced reporting remains essential to ensuring peaceful elections and strengthening public trust in democratic institutions.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the information space and ensuring that election coverage is conducted in accordance with established professional standards.
