Army Denies Torture Claims After Soldier Dies in Sokoto Custody

The Nigerian Army has rejected allegations of torture and inhumane treatment at its detention facility in Sokoto following the death of a soldier in custody, while announcing a formal investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8 Division, the military described claims contained in an online petition as false and misleading.

The petition, filed by legal practitioner Malcolm Omirhobo, alleged brutality, intimidation and reprisals against detainees at the 8 Division Provost Group Detention Facility located in Giginya Cantonment.

The Army, however, confirmed the death of Lance Corporal Bala Hudu, whose case prompted the allegations.

According to the statement, Hudu had been facing military trial since April 2023 over the killing of a commercial motorcyclist in Katsina State.

The Army said the soldier had pre-existing health conditions, including high blood pressure and eye-related ailments, and was receiving medical care while in custody.

It added that he had access to family members and legal representation throughout his detention.

The military stated that Hudu was admitted to the 8 Division Medical Services Hospital on April 15, 2026, after presenting symptoms such as headache, weakness and difficulty breathing.

He was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and malaria, and his condition reportedly worsened before his death on April 17, which the Army attributed to complications from underlying illnesses.

Amid public concern, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division has set up a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

The Army said the panel would conduct a transparent review in line with established procedures and has invited the petitioner and other interested parties to provide evidence between April 29 and May 10.

It reiterated its commitment to accountability and adherence to professional standards in handling detainees.
