The Chinese community in Lagos has commenced another round of free cataract surgeries for indigent Nigerians, with 29 beneficiaries undergoing medical screening ahead of the procedures under the “Renewed Hope, Rebirth of the Light” initiative.

The screening exercise took place at The Eye Doctors Clinic in Gbagada, Lagos, as part of an ongoing humanitarian programme that has restored sight to 770 Nigerians since it was launched.

One of the beneficiaries, 82-year-old Alhaji Bashiru Aregbe, is expected to undergo surgery after living with cataracts for several years, a condition that has significantly affected his vision.

Speaking during the exercise, Chairman of the HuaXing Arts Troupe in Nigeria, Dr. Eric Ni, said the initiative demonstrates the Chinese community’s continued commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians through humanitarian interventions.

According to him, the programme is driven by a genuine desire to provide assistance to those in need, irrespective of their background, occupation or religious affiliation.

He noted that members of the Chinese expatriate community remain dedicated to making eye care accessible to Nigerians across the country without discrimination.

Dr. Ni also acknowledged the support of the Consulate-General of China in Lagos and the overseas Chinese business community, describing their contributions as crucial to the sustainability of the programme.

He added that the initiative reflects the long-standing friendship between China and Nigeria, expressing confidence that the Chinese community would continue to support projects aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.

The “Renewed Hope, Rebirth of the Light” programme offers free cataract surgeries to low-income Nigerians who are unable to pay for treatment, helping beneficiaries regain their sight and improve their quality of life. Organisers said the inclusion of the latest 29 patients marks another step in expanding access to life-changing eye care services across the country.
