Lagos Assembly Removes Clerk, Confirms New Appointments
The Lagos State House of Assembly has officially removed Mr. Olalekan Onafeko from his position as Clerk of the House, effective immediately.
This decision was reached during plenary on Tuesday following deliberations among lawmakers and was adopted through a voice vote.
Speaker of the House, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the session, clarified that the removal was a procedural matter related to the expiration of Mr. Onafeko’s tenure rather than a disciplinary action. Mr. Onafeko had been serving as Clerk since January 14, 2022, and the Speaker commended his service and contributions to the institution’s legislative developments during his time in office.
In a swift transition, Obasa announced the appointment of Adenike Osinowo as the new Clerk of the House. She is expected to assume her duties immediately, with the Assembly leadership expressing confidence that her experience will enhance administrative efficiency and strengthen legislative processes within the House.
Additionally, the Assembly confirmed new appointments to the Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission. Latifat Ogbara was confirmed as the Chairman of the Commission, with lawmakers noting her track record and competence in public service as key reasons for her appointment.
The House also confirmed Remi Bello as a member of the Service Commission. Legislators charged both Ogbara and Bello with the responsibility of upholding the values of professionalism, transparency, and dedication as they begin their new roles.
The session underscored the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining its administrative structure. Members highlighted the importance of these appointments in ensuring the continued effectiveness of the legislative body and its service commission in supporting the democratic process in Lagos State.
