Starmer Backs Denmark on Greenland, Calls Tariffs on Allies Wrong
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s position on Greenland, stating that the territory remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that its future should be determined by the Greenlandic people and the Danish government.
In a statement, Starmer said the UK fully respects Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and supports the principle that decisions concerning the territory must be left to its people and their elected representatives.
His remarks come amid growing international attention on Greenland’s strategic importance in Arctic security discussions.
The Prime Minister also stressed that security in the Arctic is a matter of concern for the entire North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. He called on NATO allies to strengthen cooperation in addressing emerging threats from Russia across different parts of the Arctic region, noting that collective security remains central to the alliance’s stability.
Starmer criticised proposals to impose tariffs on allied nations involved in pursuing NATO’s shared security objectives. He described such trade measures as completely wrong and counterproductive to unity among allies.
He added that the UK would pursue the matter directly with the United States administration through diplomatic engagement.
The statement reflects ongoing efforts by NATO members to reinforce strategic cooperation in the Arctic, a region increasingly viewed as critical to European and transatlantic security.
