Education Minister Praises REA Over Renewable Energy Assets

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has commended the Rural Electrification Agency for its work on renewable energy projects serving schools and other public institutions.

Speaking at the launch of the Renewable Asset Management Company in Abuja, Alausa praised REA Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, saying the agency’s performance over the past two years had exceeded what was achieved in the previous decade combined.

He pointed to practical gains in the education sector, including a 3.2MW installation at the University of Abuja that provides 24-hour electricity for research.

Reliable power, he said, is fundamental to teaching, laboratories, innovation and the student experience.

Alausa described RAMCO as a necessary shift from simply installing renewable energy systems to managing them over time. He said the new company should bring greater professionalism, monitoring and accountability so that assets continue to perform rather than falling into disrepair after commissioning.

The REA has deployed tens of megawatts of solar-hybrid power across federal universities and teaching hospitals under the Energising Education Programme. Officials say the new management model is meant to protect that investment and keep the installations running.
