Okonkwo Backs Obi for ADC Presidential Ticket Ahead of 2027 Elections

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Harris Okonkwo, has said supporters of Peter Obi will work hard to ensure the former Anambra State governor emerges as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Okonkwo made the declaration while speaking to journalists during a medical outreach organised by the Annie Okonkwo Foundation in Ojoto, Anambra State. He noted that Obi’s political influence and popularity across the country make him a strong contender for the ADC presidential ticket.

According to him, members and supporters within the party who believe in Obi’s leadership style are prepared to mobilise nationwide to secure his emergence during the party’s presidential primaries.

Okonkwo said the former governor has continued to enjoy widespread support among Nigerians, particularly among young voters and members of the opposition seeking a credible alternative ahead of the next presidential election.

Peter Obi, who previously contested the presidency under the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

His political future and potential alliances ahead of 2027 have been the subject of growing speculation among political stakeholders. Observers say the build-up to the 2027 elections is gradually intensifying as political actors across different parties begin consultations and strategic positioning.

Meanwhile, supporters within the African Democratic Congress say efforts are underway to strengthen the party’s structure nationwide as it prepares for what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential race in 2027.
