Uber is restricting fully remote work to about one per cent of its workforce. The change comes as the ride-hailing company announced plans to cut around 3,300 jobs in its largest workforce reduction since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi informed staff in a memo that the vast majority of existing remote employees would be asked to move to an office. Going forward, only one per cent of workers will remain fully remote.

Uber will continue its hybrid working policy, which requires employees to work from an office three days a week. The company did not state how many staff currently work fully remotely, so the exact number of people affected by the relocation request is unclear.

Khosrowshahi said the decision was based on the benefits of staff working together in person, particularly for collaboration, problem-solving and the development of early-career employees. The company also plans to concentrate teams in a smaller number of key hubs around the world.

The job cuts form part of a wider restructuring aimed at simplifying Uber’s organisation, reducing management layers and cutting the number of small teams with limited direct reports. The move is expected to reduce management ranks by about 20 per cent.
