The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Sokoto State University chapter, has given the state government a two-week ultimatum to implement agreements already signed with the union.

The branch warned that it may embark on an indefinite strike if the demands are not met.

The position was contained in a statement signed by the branch chairman, Dr Bello Musa, and secretary, Zulkallaini Shehu. It followed a meeting with the Commissioner for Higher Education and other officials after an earlier two-month period agreed with the government had expired.

According to the union, both sides signed an agreement that the outstanding issues would be settled within two weeks, with the ministry promising to convey the demands to the governor. Members expressed concern that this was not the first time the government had failed to fully honour previous agreements.

The union’s demands include the complete implementation of the salary component of the ASUU/FGN Agreement 2025, payment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance, remittance of third-party deductions, arrears of the 25 to 35 per cent salary increment, and accumulated promotion arrears.

ASUU noted that the government had partially implemented the salary component after the earlier deadline, making Sokoto State University the first in the North-West to do so. The union called on stakeholders and the people of Sokoto to urge the government to fulfil its promises and maintain a stable working relationship at the institution.
