France Oust Sweden As Mbappe Closes In On Messi’s World Cup Record

Kylian Mbappe produced another masterful display at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as he inspired France to a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32, sending Les Bleus into the last 16 of the competition for a fourth consecutive tournament.

The match, played at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, saw the French captain net a brace either side of half-time as Didier Deschamps’ side underlined their credentials as one of the standout teams at this year’s World Cup.

Mbappe broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, cutting in sharply from the left flank before driving a powerful effort past the Swedish goalkeeper. Bradley Barcola doubled France’s advantage shortly after the restart, latching onto a delightful pass from Michael Olise before firing into the top corner. Mbappe then put the result beyond doubt in the 74th minute, racing onto another incisive ball from Olise to beat the offside trap and curl a first-time finish beyond the helpless Swedish stopper.

The result marked France’s biggest margin of victory in a World Cup knockout match since their 3-0 triumph over Brazil in the 1998 final on home soil, and further cemented their status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy this summer.

With the win, Mbappe moved to the top of the all-time list for goals scored in World Cup knockout matches, surpassing the previous mark jointly held by Brazilian greats Leonidas and Ronaldo. His double against Sweden also pulled him level with Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot, with both players now on six goals apiece, while Mbappe sits just one strike behind Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record of 19 goals.

Michael Olise was instrumental throughout the contest, registering his fifth assist of the tournament, the most by any player at a men’s World Cup since Germany’s Thomas Hassler in 1994. Speaking after the match, Mbappe was quick to deflect individual praise, insisting through a translator that the team’s collective effort remained the priority as the competition entered its business end, though he admitted France had been somewhat cautious in the opening stages before finding their rhythm.

Deschamps, who also extended his own record for most World Cup wins as a manager to 18 with the victory, saw his side book a Round of 16 date with Paraguay, who caused one of the shocks of the tournament by eliminating Germany on penalties. Sweden, managed by Graham Potter, bow out of the competition after a mixed campaign that saw them scrape through as one of the best third-placed sides in the group stage, with Potter conceding afterwards that France remain among the strongest contenders to go all the way in North America.
