Lagos State Restarts Monthly Environmental Sanitation from April 25
The Lagos State Government has announced the resumption of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, set to begin on Saturday, April 25, 2026, nearly nine years after the programme was suspended.
The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that the exercise will hold on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., urging residents to participate actively by cleaning their surroundings, clearing drainage channels, and properly disposing of waste.
The revival of the sanitation exercise is part of our commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and flood-resilient Lagos,” Wahab said.
He emphasized that unlike previous editions, there will be no movement restrictions; residents are encouraged to participate voluntarily.
The monthly sanitation programme was previously halted in November 2016 during the administration of former governor Akinwunmi Ambode following a court ruling that movement restrictions during sanitation hours violated citizens’ rights to freedom of movement.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration said the exercise is aimed at tackling waste management challenges, preventing blocked drainage systems, and promoting environmental hygiene across the state.
Residents, businesses, and community leaders have been urged to cooperate with authorities and dedicate time each month to ensure the success of the initiative.
