UK Pledges £20m to Support Gaza Reconstruction, as Starmer Attends Peace Summit in Egypt

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will on Monday announce a £20 million ($26.7 million) humanitarian package to support Gaza’s reconstruction, as his government signals readiness to play a leading role in rebuilding the war-torn enclave.

Starmer will make the pledge at a Gaza peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, co-chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, following the ceasefire agreed between Israel and Hamas on Friday, his office confirmed on Sunday.

The funding, part of a broader UK aid commitment, will target the restoration of water, sanitation, and hygiene services destroyed during two years of conflict.

“Today is the first, crucial phase of ending this war and now we must deliver the second phase, in full,” Starmer is expected to tell delegates, according to a Downing Street statement.

Downing Street also disclosed plans for the UK to host a three-day international conference focused on Gaza’s recovery and reconstruction.

The meeting will gather Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, and representatives of the private sector and international development financiers to discuss postwar rebuilding and the transformation of the Palestinian Authority.

British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper described the ceasefire as an opening for long-term recovery efforts.

“Gaza has been completely devastated. The ceasefire gives us the opportunity not just to urgently scale up humanitarian efforts but also to look to the future of Gaza’s recovery,” Cooper said.

She added that the UK would “play a crucial part in that process, convening different parties as we are doing today with Egypt and bringing in expertise, experience, and investment from the City of London to support reconstruction.”
