18 States Under Investigation Over Public Fund Mismanagement, Says EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that approximately 18 state governments across Nigeria are currently under investigation over alleged financial malpractices and mismanagement of public funds.

Speaking on Arise Television on Thursday, EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, disclosed that the anti-graft agency is tracking the movement of public funds in multiple states to enforce accountability and prevent looting.

Addressing the commission’s recent decision to place a temporary Post No Debit restriction on an Osun State Government statutory account, Uwujaren explained that the intervention was part of broader preventive measures applied across several states where suspicious transactions were flagged.

While declining to publicly name the other 18 states to avoid jeopardizing ongoing investigations, Uwujaren maintained that the commission operates strictly within legal frameworks such as Section 34 of the EFCC Act and Section 7 of the Money Laundering Act which grant a 72-hour window to freeze accounts while seeking formal court orders. He refuted allegations of political targeting ahead of upcoming elections, emphasizing that similar actions were previously taken in other states to safeguard public funds.
