Yakasai: Nigeria Has Progressed Significantly Since Independence

Veteran politician and elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has argued that Nigeria’s current state is far more advanced compared to the pre-independence era, stressing that the nation has recorded remarkable growth over the years.

Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Wednesday, the 99-year-old political figure expressed optimism about President Bola Tinubu’s administration, noting that the government’s reform-driven agenda has influenced his support.

“In my assessment, the president has made commendable strides within the short period he has been in charge,” Yakasai remarked.

Responding to questions on why some citizens often reminisce about the past with fondness, Yakasai said only those who lived under colonial rule can fully understand the level of transformation Nigeria has undergone.

“The Nigeria of today cannot be compared with the country before independence. Those of us who experienced both periods know we have moved forward greatly,” he said.

The elder statesman highlighted self-governance as one of the nation’s most important gains, pointing out that all leadership positions are now occupied by Nigerians, unlike in the colonial period when British officials dominated the system.

He also acknowledged shortcomings in the electoral system but insisted that it has provided opportunities for political accountability and leadership renewal.

“Elections have consistently offered Nigerians the chance to hold leaders responsible. Those who perform remain, and those who fail are replaced. This process has allowed the country to make steady progress,” Yakasai added.
