American engineer and educator, Nathan Thomas has become the youngest male professor in history after joining the faculty of his former college before turning 19, ending a record that had stood for more than three centuries.

Thomas began teaching computer science at Miami Dade College in August 2023 at the age of 18 years and 346 days. Many of the students in his classroom were close to his age, making his appointment one of the most remarkable milestones in modern academia.

His achievement surpassed the record set by Scottish mathematician, Colin Maclaurin, who was appointed a professor in 1717 at the age of 19 and held the distinction for 306 years. Thomas also narrowly missed becoming the youngest professor overall, taking the title of youngest male professor just 16 days younger than American engineer Alia Sabur, who became the world’s youngest female professor in 2008 at 18 years and 362 days.

Thomas’ academic journey began long before most students enter college. He enrolled simultaneously in secondary school and Miami Dade College at the age of 10 before transferring to Florida International University when he was 14.

By the age of 18, he had completed both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering with honours, returning shortly afterward to Miami Dade College as a faculty member rather than as a student.

Speaking about teaching students who were sometimes his age or older, Thomas said age had little impact in the classroom because everyone shared a common goal of learning. He added that his priority has always been helping committed students succeed.

Thomas attributed his early interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to his parents, both engineers, who encouraged logical thinking and problem-solving from an early age. He said teaching has also strengthened his own understanding of complex subjects, describing the experience of helping students grasp difficult concepts as deeply rewarding.

Beyond engineering and teaching, Thomas is pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law, where he is expected to graduate in 2028. He plans to specialise in intellectual property law, particularly in areas related to science and technology, while continuing to teach online.

Outside academics, Thomas says he enjoys an active lifestyle, playing basketball, tennis and golf. He is also a fan of the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots, plays classical piano and listens to a variety of music, including Drake, electronic dance music and house music.

Reflecting on his unconventional journey, Thomas encouraged young people not to compare their progress with others, stressing that success comes from remaining focused, working consistently and following a path best suited to individual goals.
