Oyo State Cushions Bodija Explosion Victims Loses with ₦4.5 Billion Relief Package

The Oyo State Government has approved a ₦4.5 billion relief package for the victims of the tragic Bodija explosion, which occurred on January 16, 2024, along Adeyi Avenue in the Bodija area of Ibadan.

The decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.

The explosion, which devastated the bustling commercial district, claimed several lives, destroyed properties, and left numerous families displaced.

In the immediate aftermath, the state government provided over ₦200 million for emergency relief, covering temporary accommodation, medical care, feeding, and security for the affected individuals.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the newly approved ₦4.5 billion fund is intended to provide further financial support to survivors and the families of the deceased.

This substantial package reflects the government’s commitment to restoring the lives of those affected and aiding their long-term recovery.

The relief fund will cover:
• Financial Assistance: Direct financial support to victims and their families.
• Property Reconstruction: Assistance for rebuilding destroyed properties, with government-appointed structural engineers providing guidance to ensure safety.
• Memorial Monument: Construction of a monument at the site of the explosion to honor the victims and serve as a lasting reminder of the tragedy.

As part of the relief efforts, the state government has decided to revoke the titles of two properties located off Adeyi Avenue, where the explosion occurred.

These sites will be repurposed for the memorial monument and related support structures.

Additionally, the state’s Ministry of Justice has vowed to pursue the prosecution of suspects already arraigned in connection with the incident, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals believed to be involved but still at large.

Prince Oyelade also noted that some intended beneficiaries are involved in ongoing family disputes over compensation, which the government aims to address through a 10-man committee established to oversee the distribution of funds and resolve such conflicts.

The Oyo State Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the victims, promising a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible for the explosion.

As the state moves to rebuild and recover, officials have urged residents to remain patient and cooperative, assuring them that the relief funds will be disbursed transparently and efficiently to support all affected individuals.
