The Delta State Government has indefinitely suspended the Commissioner for Works, Highways and Urban Roads, Reuben Izeze, following his remand by an Effurun State High Court over his alleged involvement in the assault of a top aide to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The suspension, which took effect immediately, was announced in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Eze Emu, on Monday.

The development came shortly after Izeze was remanded for 14 days by the court over issues connected to the assault of Simon Mudi, popularly known as Temple, who serves as Senior Special Assistant on Protocol to Governor Oborevwori.

According to the state government, the suspension is intended to allow security agencies to conduct an unbiased and impartial investigation into allegations linking the commissioner to the attack, without any risk of interference from his continued presence in office.

Officials reiterated the administration’s commitment to maintaining public safety, law and order, and safeguarding the sanctity of lives, stressing that this stance would remain firm regardless of the individuals or positions involved.

The alleged assault occurred during a chaotic APC Delta Central stakeholders’ meeting held at the Petroleum Training Institute in Effurun, an event that had already generated controversy after videos of the violence circulated widely on social media.

Izeze had earlier accused the chairman of Uvwie Local Government Area of orchestrating an attack against him during the same incident, claiming he was handcuffed, beaten, and dispossessed of personal items including his glasses, wristwatch and cash.

He was reportedly arrested on July 30 and held at the Ekpan Police Station before being brought before the court.

Izeze’s legal team has since pushed back against his continued detention, with his lawyer demanding that he either be released or formally arraigned before a competent court, arguing that he remains entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence while the investigation continues.

As it stands, the commissioner remains in custody while security agencies work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the violence and his alleged role in it.
