Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) recorded the fastest growth in scheduled seat capacity among Africa’s 10 largest airports in September, according to the OAG African Aviation Market Data for September 2026.

MMIA recorded 470,000 scheduled seats, representing a 24.1 per cent increase from the same period in 2025 and adding 90,600 seats.

The growth placed Lagos ahead of Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport, which recorded a 13.5 per cent increase.

Cairo International Airport remained Africa’s largest airport by scheduled seat capacity with 1.79 million seats, followed by Addis Ababa Bole International Airport with 1.19 million and O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg with 1.16 million.

Nigeria also recorded the fastest capacity growth among Africa’s top 10 aviation markets, with scheduled capacity rising 37.4 per cent year-on-year to 1.19 million seats.

The growth was attributed by OAG to currency reforms, a new aircraft leasing agreement and increased airline confidence in the Nigerian market.

Meanwhile, Air Peace recorded the fastest capacity growth among Africa’s top 10 airlines, with scheduled seats rising 54.7 per cent year-on-year to 354,804 in September.
