Former Sierra Leonean President, Ernest Bai Koroma has returned to his country after spending nearly three years in exile in Nigeria. He left for home on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan announced the development on his Facebook page. He said he saw Koroma off at the airport as the former leader began his journey back to Freetown.

Sierra Leone’s Vice President Mohamed Jukdeh Jalloh had earlier indicated that Koroma would return around the weekend. This followed a decision by the country’s Ministry of Justice in July 2026 to drop treason charges that were brought against him after a failed coup attempt in 2023.

Jonathan said Nigeria had served as a home away from home for Koroma for over two years. He added that quiet efforts were made with others to encourage dialogue with Sierra Leonean authorities, helping to create conditions for a safe and dignified return.

Koroma first arrived in Nigeria on January 19, 2024, after a Sierra Leone High Court allowed him to travel for medical treatment. Jonathan wished him a safe journey and expressed hope that the return would mark a moment of renewed hope and reconciliation for Koroma, his family and the people of Sierra Leone.
