Infantino Defies Pressure, Confirms 2027 Bid for Fresh FIFA Term

FIFA President, Gianni Infantino will seek re-election in March 2027 despite growing pressure from senior football officials and European authorities. He confirmed his intention to contest the election at the FIFA Congress in Morocco next year.

A FIFA spokesperson said there had been no change in the president’s position since he announced his plans in April. The statement made clear that Infantino remains committed to standing for another term.

Gianni Infantino has faced criticism over efforts to attract private investment into FIFA tournaments. The move has increased tensions with several senior officials and European football bodies that have been pushing for a change in leadership.

European nations recently withdrew a threat to boycott FIFA competitions after receiving assurances that similar structural changes would not be repeated. However, UEFA has continued to support efforts to challenge Infantino’s leadership of world football.

The FIFA president has pointed to increased funding and investment for member associations, each of which has an equal vote in the election. Potential challengers have until November 18 to formally declare their interest, setting the stage for a closely watched contest.
