The Oyo State Government has announced plans to introduce 50 electric buses as part of efforts to improve public transportation and make commuting more affordable for residents. The buses will serve inter-city, intra-city, and local government routes.

The announcement was made during the presentation of the 2026 Half-Year Budget Implementation Report by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, in Ibadan.

Officials said the initiative aims to provide a cleaner, more efficient, and cost-effective transport system.

According to the report, the state generated N406.9 billion in recurrent revenue in the first half of 2026, representing 91.2 per cent of its target for the period. Expenditure stood at N345.7 billion, which is 77.5 per cent of the planned spending for the six months.

The government noted that the strong half-year performance reflects ongoing efforts to boost internally generated revenue and sustain infrastructure development. The electric buses form part of projects designed to improve the quality of life for residents.

Officials expressed confidence that the new fleet will ease transportation challenges across the state while supporting environmental sustainability. The move is expected to reduce reliance on traditional fuel-powered vehicles and lower commuting costs for the public.
