Bigger, Stronger, Hungrier? Ronaldo Weighs In on Whether His Son Can Match Him
Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up about his eldest son’s football future, insisting that while Cristiano Jr. already has the physical tools to succeed, the real test lies in whether he can develop the same hunger that defined his father’s legendary career.
Speaking in a video shared by Netflix Sports while watching his 16-year-old son train with the Al Nassr youth team, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner praised Cristiano Jr.’s temperament and physical development, noting that the teenager is already bigger and stronger than he himself was at the same age. Ronaldo went as far as predicting that his son could eventually grow taller and more physically imposing than him.
Despite that optimism, the Portugal captain was quick to stress that physical attributes and raw talent alone would not be enough to carry his son to the top of the sport.
When asked whether Cristiano Jr. possessed the same drive and mentality that propelled Ronaldo to become one of football’s greatest ever players, he described hunger as the most difficult quality of all to instil, suggesting it cannot simply be inherited but must be earned through relentless effort and discipline.
Cristiano Jr., born in June 2010, continues to develop through Al Nassr’s youth ranks, following a path that has already seen him train with some of Europe’s biggest academies, including spells with Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United, before the family’s move to Saudi Arabia. Ronaldo, now 41, remains one of the most decorated footballers in history, with 36 major team trophies to his name, including five UEFA Champions League titles and multiple league championships across four different countries, and he continues to hold the record as men’s football’s all-time leading international goalscorer.
His comments echo previous remarks he has made over the years about his children’s football journeys, where he has consistently maintained that while talent and physical gifts matter, it is mentality, discipline and hunger that ultimately separate good players from great ones.
