Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has commissioned a new set of market and transport facilities in Ibadan North-East Local Government, directing that all 177 shops within the complex be handed over to roadside traders free of charge.

The commissioned project, delivered by the Ibadan North-East Local Government under the leadership of its Executive Chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Akintayo, includes 69 lock-up shops, 108 open stalls, a motor park, a newly constructed road network, and a modern restaurant. Speaking at the event, Makinde commended the local government for executing the projects, describing the collaboration between the state and its local councils as central to the impactful development recorded across Oyo State.

The governor said the facility had restored a once-thriving commercial hub to its former standing, giving traders and commuters a safer, more organised environment to do business.

He assured the roadside traders whose names had already been documented that the shops would be allocated to them at no cost, and issued a stern warning against anyone attempting to extort payment from beneficiaries in the process.

Makinde noted that many of the traders depend on the modest proceeds from their businesses to fund their children’s education, stressing that the project was designed specifically to ease that burden and improve their working conditions. He urged both traders and motorists to make responsible use of the new facilities.

In his remarks, Akintayo praised the governor’s people-oriented policies, saying they had inspired the local government to embark on projects with a direct and lasting impact on residents’ lives. He added that the new market and park would promote orderly transportation, boost commerce, create jobs, improve sanitation and strengthen revenue generation for the council.

The commissioning adds to a growing list of similar projects Makinde has delivered across Oyo State’s local governments in recent months, part of his administration’s broader push to relocate traders from roadsides into modern, secure market facilities.
