UNIOSUN Shuts Ifetedo Campus Over Final-Year Student’s Death as Management Denies Negligence
The management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has strongly denied allegations of institutional negligence following the tragic death of a final-year student, Miss Grace Osunlakin, which sparked student protests and prompted the indefinite closure of the institution’s Ifetedo Campus.
Osunlakin, a 400-level Criminology and Security Studies student, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, just a day after successfully participating in her final-year project defence. Following her sudden demise, grieving students staged a protest accusing the university clinic of negligence, claiming the facility operates with an rigid 6:00 PM closing time and lacked critical life-saving equipment, such as oxygen, when her health deteriorated.
Reacting to the development, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, debunked the social media narratives, clarifying that preliminary findings showed the deceased was never treated at the university’s medical facility during the emergency.
According to the institution, she had returned to her off-campus rented apartment after her defense before suffering the health complications. Management, however, announced an indefinite shutdown of the Ifetedo campus to de-escalate tensions and allow for a comprehensive assessment of its healthcare, personnel, and water supply infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has described the loss as painful and deeply heartbreaking. In a condolence message signed by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor commiserated with the bereaved family and the university community while appealing for calm. To prevent future occurrences, Governor Adeleke directed the Ministry of Education to collaborate with the school management to launch an immediate, comprehensive review of healthcare delivery and emergency response mechanisms across all state-owned university campuses.
