Kidnapped UNIJOS Student Freed After 10 Days in Captivity
A student of the University of Jos, John Arum Azi, has regained his freedom after spending 10 days in the custody of kidnappers, his family confirmed on Wednesday.
Azi, who studies early childhood education, was abducted while travelling from Jos, Plateau State, to Zaria in Kaduna State. His release followed negotiations between his family and the abductors, who initially demanded ₦30 million.
The kidnappers later reduced the ransom to ₦6 million after discussions with the family.
The sum was reportedly raised through donations from members of the public.
However, after receiving the payment, the abductors were said to have made further demands for an additional ₦4 million before eventually releasing the student.
The case had earlier sparked widespread concern after a video circulated online showing the victim being assaulted, with threats issued against his life if the ransom was not paid.
Confirmation of his release came via a video shared by his family, which showed him reunited with relatives.
The incident highlights ongoing security concerns on major routes in northern Nigeria, where cases of abduction for ransom have remained prevalent.
