Man Bags Life Imprisonment for Raping Daughter in Calabar
A High Court in Calabar on Wednesday sentenced 46-year-old Imeh Sunday to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping his daughter.
Justice Blessing Egwu of Family Court 2 in Cross River State ruled that the prosecution proved the incestuous rape case beyond reasonable doubt, citing what she described as overwhelming evidence.
The court imposed the maximum sentence provided by law.
The case was prosecuted by Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), an NGO focused on the rights of children and vulnerable persons. BRCI Principal Counsel James Ibor commended the survivor for her courage during the trial and acknowledged support from the survivor’s guardians, the state Ministry of Justice, and police.
“I wish to commend the survivor, her grandparents, the Honourable Attorney-General, the Commissioner of Police, the judiciary, as well as the staff and volunteers of BRCI for their commitment and support toward the survivor and her recovery,” Ibor said.
According to the group, this marks its fourth rape-related conviction in Cross River State in four months.
In a separate case, Bauchi State Police Command in 2025 arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly raping his 8-year-old daughter. Police Public Relations Officer Nafiu Habib said the suspect was reported on December 31, 2025, after allegedly luring the child into a bathroom and assaulting her multiple times in one day.
