CAN Denies Inviting Sultan of Sokoto to Abuja Chapel Groundbreaking
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has firmly denied reports that the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, was invited to the foundation-laying ceremony of an Ecumenical Chapel at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
According to CAN, no such invitation was ever sent by the association. The claim, which has been circulating on social media, has caused unnecessary confusion and tension.
CAN said the false report actually came from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and not from the Christian body. In a clear statement issued on Saturday, the association stressed that it did not extend any invitation to the Sultan to serve as Royal Father of the Day. The group described the circulating claim as completely false.
The Christian body warned that the story appears to be the work of mischief makers trying to stir up religious controversy. CAN urged the public, the media, and opinion leaders to always check facts before sharing information. It also reaffirmed its commitment to peace and unity among all Nigerians regardless of their faith.
The proposed Ecumenical Chapel is meant to serve as a place of worship for Christians at the busy airport. The foundation-laying ceremony has now become a topic of public discussion because of the misleading reports about the Sultan’s involvement. CAN made it clear that the event remains an internal Christian affair.
As the story continues to spread online, many Nigerians have called for calm and respect between religious groups. CAN’s strong denial is aimed at stopping any further misunderstanding. The association hopes that people will focus on facts and avoid anything that could create unnecessary division in the country.
