Three Dead, Dozens Injured in Warri–Itakpe Train Derailment

At least three passengers have been confirmed dead and 35 others injured following a serious train accident along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor in Agbor, Delta State, according to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and local officials.

The incident occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, after a passenger train traveling from Warri toward Itakpe derailed, causing four of its coaches to overturn.

The NRC’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, noting that rescue and emergency response operations were immediately activated.

“The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirms a serious train accident at Agbor along the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor,” Mr Opeifa said.

A subsequent update from the presidency confirmed three fatalities: “Sadly, three fatalities have been confirmed at this time,” the statement read. “Relevant authorities continue to assess the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while support is being provided to affected passengers”.

The Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Area, Monday Odigwe, disclosed that 35 injured passengers are receiving medical attention across three hospitals. Thirteen victims are being treated at Central Hospital in Agbor, 12 at General Hospital in Owa-Oyibu, and 10 at General Hospital in Owa-Alero.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed sadness over the accident, describing it as heartbreaking and unfortunate. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. He also directed the Commissioner for Special Duties and local government chairmen to coordinate rescue efforts.

The exact cause of the derailment remains under investigation, with the NRC advising the public to rely only on official communication channels for updates.

The Warri–Itakpe rail line is one of Nigeria’s major standard-gauge railway corridors, linking Delta State to Kogi State for both passenger and freight services.
