Zamfara Guards Intercept Explosives and ₦13m Cash Bound for Bandit Stronghold

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Zamfara State Community Protection Guards have successfully intercepted a commercial driver transporting a significant cache of dangerous materials and cash. The suspect was caught with 98 explosive devices, ₦13 million in cash, and three brand-new motorcycles. The operation took place along the Gusau–Dansadau road, a route frequently used to access remote areas plagued by insecurity.

The commandant of the security outfit, Mohammed Shehu Dalijan, briefed journalists in Gusau on Wednesday regarding the arrest. He identified the suspect as Abubakar Abdullahi, who was driving a Volkswagen Golf at the time of the interception. The vehicle was reportedly heading toward Bindin village in the Maru Local Government Area, an area known to be a stronghold for criminal elements.

During a thorough search of the vehicle, security operatives discovered the explosives and cash concealed alongside other illicit items. In addition to the high-value contraband, the guards recovered cartons of cigarettes, suspected Indian hemp, and crates of apples. The motorcycles were found packaged in their original boxes, suggesting they were intended for logistical use in rugged terrains.

The suspect, Abubakar Abdullahi, confessed during interrogation that he was tasked with delivering the items to Bindin village. He claimed the cargo was destined for illegal miners operating in the region. However, authorities noted that these “miners” are often either active bandits themselves or individuals who work in close collaboration with terror groups.

Commandant Dalijan emphasized the grave danger posed by the intercepted explosives. He explained that these specific types of devices are frequently used by bandits to carry out deadly ambushes against security personnel on patrol. By cutting off this supply line, the guards believe they have prevented imminent attacks on both law enforcement and innocent civilians.

The investigation has already expanded beyond the driver, as eight additional suspects have been detained for questioning. Security officials believe these individuals may be part of a larger logistics network that sustains banditry through the provision of funds, transport, and weaponry. The primary suspect remains in custody as authorities work to trace the original source of the explosives.

The state government and the Community Protection Guards have reiterated their commitment to dismantling the supply chains of criminals in Zamfara.

The suspect and the recovered evidence are expected to be handed over to the appropriate federal security agencies for formal prosecution. This arrest highlights the ongoing struggle to curb illegal mining and its direct links to the rising wave of banditry in Northern Nigeria.
