A group of civil society organisations, trade unions, youth groups, and other movements has called for a nationwide protest on June 12. Led by prominent lawyer Femi Falana and other activists, the coalition wants to draw attention to worsening insecurity and severe economic hardship affecting millions of Nigerians.

They chose the date to highlight that there is little to celebrate while people continue to suffer.

The protesters plan to demand the immediate release of all Nigerians held captive by terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers in states like Oyo, Borno, Ekiti, Kwara, and others. They criticised the government for repeated promises to end insecurity that have not delivered real results.

According to them, innocent citizens are still being killed, abducted, and displaced while many communities live in fear.

The coalition also pointed out the rising cost of living caused by fuel subsidy removal, higher fuel prices, currency changes, and increased electricity tariffs. These policies, they said, have pushed many families deeper into poverty.

Food prices have skyrocketed, businesses are struggling, and workers’ salaries can no longer meet basic needs.

Signatories to the call include Yinka Folarin, Hassan Soweto, Falz, and several other leaders from different groups. They urged all Nigerians to come out and join the mass action peacefully. The protest aims to push the government to take urgent steps to protect lives and improve the economy for ordinary citizens.

This planned demonstration reflects growing frustration among many Nigerians. As June 12 approaches, the public is watching to see how the government and security agencies will respond. The activists hope the protest will bring real change and force leaders to address the daily struggles of the people.
