Yiaga Africa Deploys 272 Observers for Ekiti Governorship Election

Yiaga Africa has announced plans to send over 200 observers to monitor the upcoming governorship election in Ekiti State.

The civil society group will deploy 272 observers across all 16 local government areas to ensure the process is free, fair, and peaceful. This step aims to promote transparency and build public confidence in the election scheduled for June 20.

Safiya Bichi, Head of Knowledge Management and Learning at Yiaga Africa, made the announcement in Ado-Ekiti during a meeting with civil society groups and the media. The team will include 250 stationary observers at selected polling units and 22 roving observers who will move between different locations. They will watch key stages such as the movement of election materials, voting, counting of votes, and result collation.

The group has warned political parties, including the APC, PDP, and others, to avoid violence during their campaigns and on election day. Bichi called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work professionally and follow the Electoral Act. She also urged security agencies to remain neutral and protect everyone involved in the process.

Yiaga Africa encouraged voters, especially young people, to come out and vote according to their conscience. The organisation stressed that citizens must reject the idea that votes do not count and participate actively to strengthen democracy in the state. Other speakers at the event, including journalists and disability rights advocates, pledged their support for a credible election.

This deployment of observers is expected to help reduce electoral malpractices and promote peace in Ekiti State. As the election draws near, many residents hope that all parties will work together to make the process successful. The efforts by Yiaga Africa show the important role civil society plays in supporting good governance and democratic values.
