Student Gunman Kills Four, Injures 20 in Turkish School Shooting

A student opened fire inside a school in Turkey’s Kahramanmaras province on Wednesday, killing four people and injuring 20 others, authorities said.

The provincial governor, Mukerrem Unluer, confirmed that the victims included one teacher and three students. He said the attacker brought firearms believed to belong to his father to school in a backpack before entering two classrooms and shooting indiscriminately.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene as security forces sealed off the school premises. Television footage showed ambulances stationed nearby, while distraught parents gathered outside seeking information about their children.

Witnesses reported hearing sustained gunfire during the incident.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said prosecutors were immediately assigned to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The latest violence comes just a day after a separate school attack in the Siverek district of Sanliurfa province, where a former student opened fire with a shotgun, injuring 16 people before taking his own life during a confrontation with police. Among those wounded were several students and a teacher.

Although such incidents remain uncommon in Turkey, recent attacks have raised concerns about school safety. In a similar case in May 2024, a former student fatally shot a private high school principal in Istanbul months after being expelled.
