Boko Haram, ISWAP Rivalry Escalates as Fierce Battle Claims Over 100 Lives in Lake Chad Region

A deadly confrontation has erupted between Boko Haram and its rival faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in the Lake Chad Basin, leading to heavy casualties and heightened instability in the area. Reports from Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency analyst based in the Northeast, indicate that the clashes have resulted in more than 100 deaths, with Boko Haram reportedly gaining the upper hand and taking control of several ISWAP camps.

According to the report, the hostilities have spread across multiple islands and waterways in Borno State, particularly within the Kukawa and Abadam local government areas, where both groups have long maintained strongholds. Sources familiar with the conflict said the latest fighting marks one of the bloodiest internal battles between the two jihadist factions in recent months.

Zagazola, who has consistently tracked developments in the region, shared updates suggesting that Boko Haram militants launched a coordinated offensive against ISWAP positions, leading to fierce gun battles and the eventual overrunning of several camps.

The footage circulating online appeared to show chaotic scenes from the battlefield near riverine settlements, though its authenticity has yet to be independently verified.

While the Nigerian military has not yet issued an official statement on the renewed insurgent confrontation, local security analysts believe the infighting could momentarily weaken both factions and offer an opportunity for security forces to intensify clearance operations in the affected corridors.

The rivalry between Boko Haram and ISWAP dates back to their split in 2016, following leadership disputes and ideological differences.

Since then, both groups have periodically clashed over control of territories, resources, and recruits in the volatile Lake Chad region.

As the battle rages on, concerns are growing among residents and humanitarian agencies operating in northern Borno. Thousands of civilians in nearby communities have reportedly fled to safer areas, fearing that the violence could spill over into their settlements.

At the time of filing this report, Zagazola Makama and other independent monitors continue to provide updates, though official confirmation of the casualty figures and territorial claims remains pending.
