A dispute between the Airline Operators of Nigeria and aviation unions over the five per cent Ticket Sales Charge has intensified, with unions threatening to shut down airline operations without further notice.

The development comes after domestic airlines warned against any disruption of their flights.

The Ticket Sales Charge is a statutory levy collected by airlines from passengers on behalf of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and other aviation agencies. Unions claim that non-remittance of the funds is depriving the agencies of resources needed for safe and efficient operations.

Airline operators have insisted that the unions are misinformed on the issue and should seek clarification from the appropriate authorities.

They have also stated that any group that attempts to disrupt operations would be held responsible for the consequences.

Following the expiration of earlier ultimatums, union leaders notified the airlines, the police, and the Department of State Services of their decision to take action. They accused some airlines of withholding the funds collected from passengers and said the affected carriers’ operations would be grounded.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has intervened, saying the Federal Government is already engaging all parties to prevent any disruption of flight operations. He noted that efforts were ongoing to resolve the matter.
