Don Calls for Enforcement of Laws to Curb Animal Cruelty in Nigeria

A university don has urged authorities to strengthen the enforcement of existing laws to address the rising cases of cruelty against animals across Nigeria.

The call was made by Babajide Olugbenga Dasaolu, a professor of African and Applied Ethics, during his inaugural lecture at Olabisi Onabanjo University.

He expressed concern that despite the presence of legal provisions against animal abuse, weak enforcement has allowed the practice to persist. Dasaolu noted that cultural beliefs and superstition play a significant role in fueling violence against animals.

He explained that certain species, including cats, bats, and owls, are often associated with witchcraft in some communities, leading to their indiscriminate killing. According to him, such actions not only raise ethical concerns but also threaten ecological balance, as animals play critical roles in maintaining biodiversity.

He stressed that animals are capable of suffering and should be treated as part of the moral community deserving protection. The professor further argued that Nigeria’s existing legal framework, including provisions under the Criminal Code, has not been effectively implemented.

He called for stricter penalties, clearer legislation, and improved enforcement mechanisms to deter offenders.

His remarks come amid ongoing national conversations around wildlife protection, particularly as a proposed wildlife protection bill aimed at combating illegal trafficking and strengthening conservation efforts awaits presidential assent.

Dasaolu maintained that laws must serve not only as punitive tools but also as instruments of moral guidance, urging Nigerians to move away from harmful traditional beliefs and embrace humane treatment of animals.

He called on government agencies, civil society groups, and the public to work collectively to promote animal welfare and ensure that cruelty against animals is decisively addressed.
