The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Yobe State Command, has officially declared a convicted inmate, Dahiru Mohammed, wanted after he successfully escaped from custody following a road accident.
The incident occurred on April 13, 2026, while the inmate was being transported from the Potiskum Medium Security Custodial Centre to Damaturu.
The escape took place along the Potiskum–Damaturu road when the vehicle conveying the inmates was involved in a crash.
According to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Abdullahi Adamu, the prisoner took advantage of the confusion and the rescue efforts being made for the accident victims to flee the scene.
Dahiru Mohammed is described as a 30-year-old male with prison identification number J/1539/24. He was originally admitted into the custodial facility on November 29, 2024, following a conviction under case number YBS/DT/HC/27/24. He is reportedly a native of Askiwari village in the Tarmuwa local government area.
Authorities have classified the fugitive as dangerous and have strongly advised members of the public against trying to engage or apprehend him personally.
The NCoS emphasized that the safety of the public is a priority and warned that the individual could pose a significant security threat while at large.
The Yobe State Command has appealed to residents, particularly those living within the Potiskum and Damaturu axis, to be extra vigilant. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious movements or information regarding the whereabouts of the fugitive to the nearest police station or correctional facility immediately.
In the official statement, the Service reminded the public that harboring a fugitive is a serious criminal offense. Under Nigerian law, anyone found assisting or hiding an escaped prisoner faces severe legal penalties, as the government seeks to ensure that the convict is returned to serve his sentence.
The Nigerian Correctional Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and ensuring the inmate is re-arrested without delay. They expressed confidence that with the cooperation of the public and other security agencies, Dahiru Mohammed would soon be back in custody to face the law.
