Anambra Electricity Commission Assures Residents of Improved Services

The Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission has assured residents of Anambra State of improved electricity service delivery as it intensifies reforms aimed at addressing persistent challenges in the power sector.

The Commission gave the assurance amid widespread complaints over irregular power supply, estimated billing, and poor infrastructure affecting homes and businesses across the state.

Speaking during recent stakeholder engagements, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ASERC, Frank Okafor, said the Commission is strengthening regulatory oversight to ensure electricity providers meet minimum service standards and operate transparently.

He explained that ASERC, established under the Anambra State Electricity Law, is focused on protecting consumers while creating an efficient and sustainable electricity market in the state.

According to him, key reforms being implemented include the enforcement of fair and cost-reflective tariffs, improved monitoring of distribution companies, and the promotion of prepaid meter installation to curb estimated billing—a major source of dispute between consumers and service providers.

The Commission also disclosed that it has received several complaints from residents since its establishment, many relating to overbilling and inadequate service delivery. It assured that mechanisms have been put in place to address such issues promptly.

Electricity distribution in the state is currently handled by FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company, which is expected to work closely with the regulator to improve supply, reduce technical losses, and tackle energy theft and vandalism.

ASERC emphasized the importance of collaboration between consumers, operators, and regulators, urging residents to report faults, outages, and billing concerns through its official complaint channels.

While acknowledging that power supply remains constrained due to limitations from the national grid, the Commission expressed optimism that ongoing reforms and planned investments would gradually lead to more stable and reliable electricity across the state.

The development forms part of broader efforts by the Anambra State Government to strengthen the electricity sector, attract investment, and support economic growth through improved energy access.
