I’ll Comb Europe for New Players” Ahead of 2026 Unity Cup, Says Chelle

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle has signaled a major shift in recruitment strategy, vowing to “comb Europe” for fresh talent as Nigeria prepares for the 2026 Unity Cup.

Speaking via NFF Media, the French-Malian tactician emphasized that the upcoming four-nation tournament in London will serve as the primary laboratory for rebuilding the national team’s depth following the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Unity Cup, scheduled to take place this May at The Valley (home of Charlton Athletic), will see Nigeria face off against Zimbabwe in their opening match on May 26. Chelle intends to use the trip to the United Kingdom to integrate dual-nationality players and those who have previously been on the fringes of the squad.

“The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players,” Chelle stated. “I will invite new players of Nigerian descent, alongside those who were previously called up but never got the chance to feature.”

While the search for European-based “eligible Eagles” is a priority, Chelle was quick to reassure domestic fans that the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) remains a vital part of his vision. He confirmed that he would be personally monitoring several domestic league games through the end of the season to identify standout performers. This dual-scouting approach is seen as an effort to shore up the squad before high-stakes friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June—matches Chelle insists are crucial for improving Nigeria’s FIFA global ranking.

The coach’s plan to rest established stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman for the London tournament opens the door for a new generation. In previous editions of the competition, Chelle successfully handed debuts to several prospects, and with the “Europe sweep” now in motion, the Super Eagles appear set for a significant roster refresh ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
