NHRC Demands Justice for Ebonyi Woman Killed Over Inheritance

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for justice in the case of a woman from Ebonyi State who was brutally killed.

The victim was murdered after she demanded her fair share of her late father’s property. Her family members allegedly opposed her claim simply because she was a woman.

The woman lived in her father’s house at Onicha Igbeze in Onicha Local Government Area. She was not married and had lost her only brother under mysterious circumstances. When she insisted on her right to inherit, she was attacked, dismembered, and her body was set on fire behind the house. The killing has been described as cruel and shocking.

The NHRC strongly condemned the incident. Officials described it as a clear case of gender-based violence and a violation of basic human rights. They have written to the Ebonyi State Police Command, asking for a thorough investigation and the arrest of those responsible.

The commission wants the killers brought to justice quickly.

This sad event has sparked fresh discussions about harmful traditions that deny women the right to inherit property. In some communities, old customs still favour only male children, leaving daughters with nothing even when they have equal rights under the law.

Such practices often lead to disputes, fights, and sometimes violence.

Many people believe the case should serve as a strong warning. Denying women their inheritance rights is not only unfair but also against the law. The NHRC and other groups are urging families and communities to treat sons and daughters equally when sharing family assets.

In the end, this incident highlights the need for change in how inheritance matters are handled. If justice is done, it can help protect other women from similar attacks. Families should learn to share fairly and peacefully, giving every child the chance to benefit from their parents’ hard work, regardless of gender.
