A new trust aimed at improving the welfare and long-term security of Nigerian entertainers and other creative professionals has been unveiled in Lagos, with a focus on healthcare, insurance and financial assistance.

The Society for the Advancement of Entertainment and Trust was launched on Wednesday following growing concerns over the number of entertainers facing serious illnesses, sudden deaths and financial hardship without adequate social protection.

Promoted by entertainment practitioner Victory Okelezo, popularly known as Kupa Victory, the initiative seeks to create a sustainable support system for creatives and reduce their dependence on public appeals when they encounter medical emergencies.

Speaking at the unveiling, Okelezo said the initiative was conceived in response to increasing cases of illness and premature deaths among members of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

He described the trust as a non-profit organisation established to support vulnerable members of the creative sector, particularly those confronted with serious and expensive medical conditions.

Okelezo said the organisation would work with government agencies, corporate bodies and individuals to mobilise resources for medical care and other forms of assistance for creatives in need.

He said the trust would provide financial and medical support, advocacy and compassionate care to seriously ill artists, while promoting partnerships aimed at protecting their welfare and preserving their dignity.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, who spoke at the event, described the initiative as timely, arguing that entertainers who had made significant contributions to society should not be forced to rely on public donations when they face health challenges.

Falana called for increased awareness and access to insurance among entertainers, urging them to embrace sustainable social protection measures that could provide security beyond their active years.

He expressed optimism that the initiative could serve as a model for other African countries if successfully implemented.

Members of the Board of Trustees unveiled at the event include veteran actress Patience Ozokwo, representing the Actors Guild of Nigeria; Fidelis Duker, representing the Directors Guild of Nigeria; actor Sani Danja; and Bayo Adegbe, representing the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria.

Falana was inaugurated as the Protector of the Trust.

The initiative, established under the theme “Life After the Art,” is intended to provide Nigerian creatives with greater dignity, financial security and access to support during and after their active careers in the entertainment industry.
