Journalists Escape Crash During Gombe Governor’s Project Tour

Journalists covering Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s inspection tour of projects across local government areas in Gombe State narrowly escaped a serious road accident after a vehicle linked to a council chairperson allegedly drove recklessly.

The incident occurred while members of the Correspondents’ Chapel were travelling in their official bus as part of the media team accompanying the governor on the tour.

According to eyewitness accounts, the driver attached to the Shongom Local Government chairperson attempted a risky overtaking manoeuvre, forcing the journalists’ vehicle off the road.

During the manoeuvre, the chairperson’s vehicle reportedly grazed the driver’s side mirror of the media bus, causing panic among the occupants. The bus driver managed to regain control, preventing what could have resulted in a fatal crash.

No injuries were reported, but the development has heightened concerns among media professionals in the state, particularly against the backdrop of recent fatal accidents involving journalists in the North-East.

In Gombe State, seven journalists and media workers recently lost their lives in a road crash that sent shockwaves through the media community.

Similarly, in neighbouring Bauchi State, 14 journalists were involved in an accident that claimed one life and left several others injured.

The deceased, Kani Ben, a cameraman with Channels Television, was laid to rest in Adamawa State last Saturday.

The latest near-miss has further intensified calls for improved safety measures and responsible driving, especially during official engagements involving convoys and media personnel.
