The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged assault of a lecturer following a sexual misconduct allegation involving a female student.

The incident reportedly occurred within the university premises on Saturday, August 15, 2026, and was recorded on video before the footage circulated widely on social media.

In a statement signed by the institution’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, the university condemned the alleged assault and warned against violence, self-help and extrajudicial actions within its community.

Management said the university maintains a zero-tolerance stance on sexual misconduct, harassment and other inappropriate behaviour, in line with the position of Vice-Chancellor Ugochukwu Anyaehie.

However, it stressed that allegations of wrongdoing must be handled through the university’s established disciplinary procedures and in accordance with due process.

The university said the seriousness of the allegation prompted management to initiate a comprehensive and impartial investigation aimed at determining what occurred and establishing the facts surrounding the incident.

According to the statement, relevant administrative procedures have also been activated to ensure that the matter is handled fairly and objectively, with the rights of all parties protected.

UNIZIK reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the dignity, security and welfare of its students and staff, adding that appropriate action would be taken against any conduct found to violate those principles.

The institution said it would provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
