ASP Aondoaver Asom Killed After Foiling Robbery Attack in Benue
By Momodu Favour
An Assistant Superintendent of Police, Aondoaver Asom, attached to the Ops Zenda Joint Task Force (JTF), has been killed after bravely repelling an armed robbery attack in Benue State.
ASP Asom was reportedly travelling in a passenger vehicle to resume duty with Operations Zenda JTF when armed robbers ambushed the vehicle. In the ensuing gun battle, he gallantly confronted the attackers and shot three of the robbers dead, successfully foiling the attack and preventing further harm to other passengers.
Sources say the officer sustained fatal injuries during the exchange and later succumbed, marking a tragic end to what many have described as an act of extraordinary courage and selflessness.
The incident has sparked calls for the authorities to honour his sacrifice and provide support for his family.
Appeals have been directed to the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, urging them to ensure that ASP Asom’s bravery is formally recognised and that his immediate family receives adequate care and assistance.
Operations Zenda JTF, a special security outfit operating in parts of the North-Central region, has been involved in combating criminal activities including banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
Colleagues and community members have described ASP Asom as a dedicated officer who died in active service while protecting innocent lives.
Many Nigerians have also been urged to extend support to the bereaved family as a way of honouring the fallen officer’s ultimate sacrifice.
Further details surrounding the incident are expected from the police authorities.
