Nigerian Army Detains Alleged Weapons Dealer in Cross River; Seizes Bulk Ammunition

Troops of the Nigerian Army have apprehended an alleged gun runner in the Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State.

During the intelligence-driven mission, security forces seized 245 pump-action cartridges.

The arrest was carried out on Sunday, January 26, 2026, by personnel from the 245 Battalion under the 13 Brigade Headquarters. The operation was launched after receiving reliable tips regarding the unlawful transportation of weapons in the region.

The individual in custody, Ojo Friday, originally hails from the Ochon community in the Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State but reportedly lives in Abomege, Ebonyi State.

Military authorities stated that the confiscated ammunition was intended for illegal distribution both within the immediate vicinity and in surrounding areas.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Major Yemi Sokoya, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 13 Brigade, confirmed the capture. He noted that both the individual and the seized munitions are being held as the investigation continues.

“The suspect and the recovered items have been secured in custody, and preliminary investigations are ongoing,” Sokoya stated.

Reflecting on the mission, Brigadier General Peter Olusegun Alimikhena, Commander of the 13 Brigade, emphasized that the apprehension highlights the military’s dedication to security efforts led by intelligence.

“This operation demonstrates our proactive, intelligence-driven approach to internal security and our commitment to disrupting illicit arms supply chains that threaten peace and stability,” Alimikhena said.

The Commander further noted that the Army intends to maintain its partnership with local residents and other security organizations to stop the spread of small arms and light weaponry.

“The Nigerian Army, under 13 Brigade, will continue to work closely with sister security agencies and host communities to prevent the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. We remain committed to maintaining a secure environment for socio-economic activities within our area of responsibility,” he said.

Additionally, the Brigade Commander praised the soldiers for their alert and professional conduct, while calling on the general public to assist security operations by sharing accurate and prompt information.

The Nigerian Army has stepped up its activities throughout Cross River State as part of an expanded strategy to fight arms smuggling and bolster domestic safety.
