Embrace Unity in Diversity, Marwa Charges Nigerians

In a timely call for national cohesion, Mohammed Buba Marwa, Chairman and CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has urged Nigerians to embrace unity in diversity, describing the country’s cultural, ethnic, and religious plurality as a “gift and a trust” that must be safeguarded

Marwa made the remarks during the public presentation of the book Buni Boy in Abuja, highlighting the importance of national integration and social cohesion. Drawing from his extensive personal and professional experience living and serving across various parts of the country, he emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than division Nigeria’s challenges are real, but they should not lead us to consider disunity. Our differences, when managed well, can make us stronger,” Marwa said. He stressed that the country’s historic ethos of inclusion and mutual respect remains critical to fostering peace and progress Marwa’s appeal comes amid ongoing conversations around social cohesion in Nigeria, where ethnic, religious, and regional divisions continue to pose challenges. Civil society groups, traditional leaders, and government agencies have repeatedly called on citizens to prioritize national identity over sectional interests According to Marwa, the path to a more united Nigeria lies in repairing societal fault lines, promoting inclusion, and valuing diversity as a shared national asset. He urged citizens to see their differences as opportunities for dialogue, collaboration, and mutual understanding. Experts say that such messages are especially vital in the current climate, where the country’s plurality — comprising over 250 ethnic groups and hundreds of languages — presents both challenges and opportunities for unity. Marwa’s call reinforces the view that sustainable development and national stability depend on inclusiveness, tolerance, and the collective commitment of all Nigerians. As the nation continues to navigate socio-economic and political complexities, voices like Marwa’s serve as reminders that unity, anchored in respect for diversity, is not only desirable but essential for Nigeria’s future.
