PDP Slams Tinubu for Cancelling Trips to South Africa, Angola

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for cancelling his scheduled diplomatic visits to South Africa and Angola, describing the move as a superficial response to Nigeria’s escalating security challenges. The opposition party argued that merely calling off international travel does not amount to decisive leadership at a time when several regions of the country are grappling with violence, kidnappings and deteriorating public safety.

The Presidency had announced that President Tinubu postponed the trips in order to remain in the country for further security briefings following a series of disturbing incidents, including the mass abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and an attack on worshippers in Kwara State. Officials said the president had also ordered security agencies to intensify operations in affected areas and reinforce surveillance around vulnerable communities.

However, the PDP criticised the explanation, insisting that Nigerians need tangible results rather than symbolic gestures. According to the party, cancelling foreign engagements does not on its own guarantee improved security, nor does it demonstrate a concrete plan to address the root causes of the crisis. PDP leaders demanded that the president take direct, on-the-ground action by deploying more personnel, strengthening intelligence gathering, and ensuring that operational commands are strategically positioned closer to troubled regions.

Political observers have noted that the opposition’s reaction mirrors the growing frustrations of citizens who are desperate for reassurance and effective intervention. Analysts say that while remaining in the country during a crisis is expected of a leader, the public is more concerned about sustained military presence, prompt rescue missions, and clear communication from authorities.

Civil society groups have also weighed in, urging the federal government to work more closely with state governments, local vigilante networks and traditional institutions to prevent further attacks. They argue that the current situation requires a unified national approach rather than fragmented efforts.

Meanwhile, the Presidency continues to defend the decision, maintaining that the president’s focus is fully on restoring security and ensuring the safe return of abducted schoolchildren. Officials noted that other senior government representatives have been delegated to attend international engagements on behalf of the country while Tinubu monitors domestic developments.
