President Museveni Eyes 7th Term as Uganda’s Political Dynasty Tightens Grip

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, who has held power since 1986, is preparing to seek re-election in 2026, marking what would be his seventh term in office. Now 80 years old, Museveni’s continued hold on power has drawn global attention and stirred both support and criticism domestically, especially as concerns grow over Uganda’s evolving political landscape.

Museveni first rose to power after a successful armed rebellion that ousted the government of Tito Okello. Over the decades, he has maintained a firm grip on Uganda’s leadership, steadily reshaping the constitution to remove age and term limits, enabling his long tenure.

His family’s influence across key arms of government has further fueled debate about the growing centralization of authority. His wife, Janet Museveni, currently serves as Uganda’s Minister of Education and Sports, while their son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is the Chief of Defence Forces, the top position in Uganda’s military.

General Muhoozi has increasingly gained prominence in the country’s political and military spheres, sparking speculation about a potential succession plan. Despite previous denials, his public statements and political posturing have fueled rumors that he may be positioned to eventually take over from his father.

Critics argue that Uganda is sliding into a dynastic system masked by electoral processes, while supporters say President Museveni’s leadership has brought stability and economic development after years of conflict.

As the 2026 general elections approach, all eyes will be on Uganda to see whether the ageing leader will indeed stand again and what that could mean for the country’s democratic future.
