Tinubu Invincible, No Single Party can Defeat Him in 2027 Election, Says Onovo

Former presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP), Martin Onovo, has declared that no single political party can defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections without a broad and strategic opposition coalition.

Speaking during an interview in Lagos, Onovo said that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), under Tinubu’s leadership, remains too politically entrenched to be defeated by a fragmented opposition.

He emphasized the need for a united front among opposition parties, warning that another divided presidential contest would guarantee Tinubu’s re-election.

“The coalition of opposition leaders needs a vigorous candidate; a strong candidate to brighten its chances in 2027. The coalition needs somebody with a clear agenda and a clear vision. We need a candidate with a strong background of integrity,” Onovo said.

Onovo also cautioned against fielding veteran politicians as the face of such a coalition, stating that the political moment demands youthful, dynamic leadership that resonates with the country’s younger population.

He indirectly criticized efforts to bring back recurring figures like Atiku Abubakar, insisting that the opposition must break from the past.

“The opposition doesn’t need any old person now. It is time to use the energy of the young. Let’s not recycle those who have already failed the country,” he said.

This call echoes sentiments from other political figures, including former Labour Party spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo, who has also urged opposition unity.

Okonkwo recently stated that no single candidate could defeat Tinubu without elite and grassroots collaboration.

Tinubu, who was officially endorsed for a second term by the APC in May, has spent his first term implementing sweeping reforms including subsidy removal, currency unification, and national security restructuring. While these policies have drawn praise from international observers, they have also led to economic hardship for many Nigerians.

Analysts suggest that Tinubu’s incumbency advantage, party machinery, and financial resources make him a formidable candidate in 2027.

Onovo, however, insists that the opposition still stands a chance—if it can organize itself early and avoid the disunity that marred the 2023 elections.

He concluded by calling for a well-structured merger or alliance among opposition forces, emphasizing that success in 2027 depends not just on having the right candidate, but on unity, clarity of message, and national appeal.

“We must not waste 2027 the way we wasted 2023,” he said.
